After a bit of conversation, Anya asked, “Today in maths class, the teacher taught us multiplication. I’m not sure I understand it, Accha.”
“Let’s go to the study room and talk about it,” Accha replied, and they both went to the study room.

Accha asked, “What do you know about multiplication, Anya?”
“I am not sure Accha. Can you explain it?”, asked Anya.
Accha said, “Can you go and get the toothpicks from the kitchen? They are on the top counter. If you can’t reach them, ask Amma(mother) to help you.”
Anya came back with the toothpicks. Accha made 5 groups, each with 3 sticks.
Anya, can you count the sticks and tell me the total number?
Anya counted and said, “15.”
Accha smiled and explained, “So, adding the number 3 five times — like this: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 — gives you 15. That is what multiplication does: it’s the repeated addition of the same number one or more times. So, 3 × 5 = 15. Does that make sense?”
Anya nodded, then asked, “But if we already have addition, why do we need multiplication, Accha?”
“Good question, Anya. Let me give you an example. If you wanted to add bigger numbers many times, would addition still be easy? What do you think? For example, what if you had to add 200, 80 times? Would that be easy?
“It would be difficult, Accha.”
“Exactly,” said Accha. “That’s why multiplication is used. It makes adding the same number multiple times much easier.”
“Can you give me an example where we use multiplication?” Anya asked.
“Sure. Let us say one pencil costs 5 rupees. How much would 10 pencils cost?”
Anya arranged the toothpicks into 10 groups, with 5 sticks in each group. She counted and said, “50.”
“That’s right! So, If each pencil costs 5 rupees and you need 10 pencils, you just multiply 5 by 10 to get 50 rupees! “ Accha said. “So, now do you see why we use multiplication instead of adding many times?”
“Yes, Accha,” Anya replied. “When we need to add the same number over and over, it’s much easier to multiply.”
“Exactly!” Accha said. “Multiplication tables help us multiply faster, like knowing that 3 × 5 is 15 without having to add. Learning them makes solving problems quicker and easier.” You can practice them and get really good at it!”
Anya smiled. “I will, Accha!”
